Taiwan's former Vice President Annette Lu said that the joint statement issued by US and China leaders after the summit is a serious warning to Taiwan, but Taiwan's government insists that it is now the best time for trilateral relations between the United States, China, and Taiwan over the past sixty years.
Lu pointed out that in the past, Chinese and U.S. leaders always stated their views on Taiwan individually when made public speech or signed communique, but the US-China joint statement signed on Tuesday shows that China and the U.S. has reached consensus, which is a serious warning to Taiwan.
The United States President Barack Obama had left China Wednesday, he issued a joint statement with Chinese President Hu Jintao on Tuesday, the United States for the first time declare that "the U.S. respect China's territorial integrity and sovereignty". President Hu Jintao praised Obama's position on Taiwan.
Although Obama verbally referred to Taiwan Relations Act which is the legal basis for the U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, the US-China joint statement doesn't mention Taiwan Relations Act. Annette Lu considered this another warning to Taiwan.
The Central News Agency quoted the presidential spokesman Wang Yu Qi said that it is understandable for the Joint Declaration does not mention the Taiwan Relations Act.
Wang said Obama reiterated Taiwan Relations Act to the world at the press conference, which shows that the U.S. will continue to abide by the commitments of Taiwan Relations Act.
He also said that President Ma's administration has improved cross-strait relations, the affirmation made by two U.S. Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama also confirmed what President Ma said, it is now the best time for trilateral relations between the United States, China, and Taiwan over the past sixty years.
Annette Lu criticised that Ma Ying-jeou just felt good about himself. In an election of local municipal elections she said that the people of Taiwan should use their vote to punish Ma Ying-jeou.
